The number of people living outside their country of origin is continuing to increase for many reasons. To understand what migration will look like in the future, we need to understand migration trends and how they have evolved over time.
1. In 2020, the number of international migrants was at a historical high. In fact, 3.6% of the global population were immigrants in 2020, up from 3.2% a decade earlier.
2. Migrants tend to choose to move to high-income countries, such as Europe of the United States, because their economy is stronger and they offer more social stability.
3. Europe and Northern America have the largest share of migrants. However, they also send the largest number of migrants abroad. Almost 25% of migrants originate from Europe or North America.
4. In 2019 almost 6.1 million students were studying outside of their country of origin, with the most popular destinations being: the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Russian Federation.
5. The number of international migrants has increased in all areas on the UN, with most migrants moving to Europe and Asia, which now each have over 80 million migrants.
From this evidence, it looks like migration will continue to rise in popularity as more chances become available for people to live, work, and study abroad.
