Public concern about immigration varies significantly worldwide. While some countries frequently rank it among their top issues, others prioritize different challenges.
A recent Statista Consumer Insights survey across 53 countries found that, on average, only 25% of respondents considered immigration a major issue, despite its frequent media coverage. Responses ranged from just 5% in China to 62% in Chile, a key destination for Latin American immigrants due to its stability.
In China, immigration ranked 15th out of 18 issues, while in Brazil, only 7% viewed it as a major concern, placing it last. Conversely, in Chile, it was the second most cited issue after crime, while in Germany (43%), it followed inflation. Switzerland and Austria also ranked immigration highly, reflecting heightened concern in German-speaking nations.
In Sweden, the Netherlands, and Turkey, immigration ranked 4th, while in France, it placed 5th. Notably, despite 39% of Italians identifying immigration as a major issue, it ranked only 10th, as crime, climate change, and the economy were seen as more pressing.
In the U.S., 31% of respondents named immigration a major issue, ranking it 8th. Eastern European countries, including Poland, showed even lower concern, likely due to receiving fewer immigrants, aside from recent arrivals from Ukraine.
